Rising sensation Jack Draper was not chosen for Great Britain’s Davis Cup team, but Andy Murray was. The Scot will compete in Glasgow’s group stage of the championship alongside Cameron Norrie, Dan Evans, and world no. 1 in doubles Joe Salisbury.
Despite rising from outside the top 250 to number 55 in the rankings this season, Draper, 20, was not chosen. Playing in a Davis Cup match in front of a home audience is always memorable, according to Murray.
“Being a member of the squad again means a lot,” she said. “Some of the finest experiences of my career have come from representing my nation in the Davis Cup.”
The team, which is coached by British number one Norrie and has Murray returning after a two-year sabbatical, will compete against the United States, Kazakhstan, and the Netherlands. It doesn’t get much better than entering a Davis Cup as the British number one, according to Norrie.
“Of course, having Andy on the team is a big plus. He and Dan were both present in 2015 when we eventually won the tournament, and although having that background is crucial, it also motivates the rest of us to travel to this location.”
Murray is rated 47th in the world, eight spots ahead of Draper, who last week at the Canadian Open advanced to his first quarterfinal in a Masters 1,000 competition.
Leon Smith, captain of the Davis Cup, claimed that the selection procedure was “tougher than before.” In the upcoming weeks, he said, they will be adding a fifth player, providing doubles specialist Neal Skupski and Draper—who on Sunday won the Canadian Open championship with Dutchman Wesley Koolhof—an additional opportunity to make the team.
Glasgow served as the venue for both Great Britain’s triumph over Australia in the semifinals and their match against the United States in the first round of the 2015 World Cup. Murray scored the game-winning goal as Great Britain won the trophy for the first time since 1936.
From 13 to 18 September, four cities—Glasgow, Bologna, Hamburg, and Valencia—will host the Davis Cup group stage. In November in Malaga, the top two teams from each of the four groups proceed to the knockout rounds.
