The United Arab Emirates were defeated by Sri Lanka at the Men’s T20 World Cup despite spinner Karthik Meiyappan’s hat-trick.
To help limit Sri Lanka to 152-8, Meiyappan took out Bhanuka Rajapaksa, Charith Asalanka, and Dasun Shanaka.
The UAE, though, lost by 79 runs after being skittled for 73 and are now all but out of the running.
To advance to the next round, Sri Lanka must now defeat the Netherlands with a decisive victory in their final match.
In the first game on Tuesday, the Netherlands defeated Namibia by five wickets to take first place in Group A. Sri Lanka placed third behind Namibia due to their lower net run rate.
At 5:00 BST on Thursday, the 2014 winners take against the Netherlands before Namibia plays the UAE (09:00).
The top two teams from each group will advance to the Super 12s, which begin on October 22 and feature two groups of six teams. England will take against the group A winner and group B’s runner-up.
Despite losing, Meiyappan made history with what will go down as one of the tournament’s most memorable moments.
The 22-year-old is only the sixth player from any country to accomplish this feat in a Men’s T20 World Cup and the first UAE player to take a T20 international hat-trick.
It came at a vital moment as well, with Sri Lanka behind 117-2 and poised to explode.
Rajapaksa was duped into a careless hit beyond his off stump that looped to Kashif Daud at deep cover, giving him his maiden wicket.
Asalanka, a second left-hander, came next and stole a googly through to wicketkeeper Vriitya Aravind.
